2019 polls: Additional registration hits 14M

As the country prepares for the general election come February 2019, additional 14 million voters have been registered in Nigeria ahead the polls, increasing the number to 84 million voters.

Independent National Electoral Commission chairman Yakubu Mahmood said on Thursday, the addition “represents 21 percent increase” to the country’s eligible voter database as the body concluded the continuous voter registration that started 14 months ago.

“With 14 million more Nigerians registered to vote, the total number of voters registered by the commission now stands at 84 million,” he told a gathering of top electoral officers in Abuja.

The electoral body concluded the continued voter registration exercise last Friday amid calls on citizens to proceed to collect their permanent voter’s cards (PVC).
