Senate halts Customs’ duty payment on old vehicles
The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) proposed duty on old vehicles has been put on hold by the Senate.
The NCS had issued a circular dated March 2, informing all Nigerians who had not paid duty on old vehicles to do so within a grace period of one month, to avoid clampdown on the vehicles and possible prosecution.
But, the Senate on Tuesday directed the Customs to halt all actions on the implementation of its circular until the leadership appeared before its committee to explain in details the purpose of the circular to the Nigerians.
The upper chamber directed its Committee on Customs to immediately engage the Service with a view to fashioning out what could clearly be acceptable to the public under a democratic dispensation.
The resolution followed a motion by the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, over the directive of the Customs Comptroller General, Colonel Hameed Ali (rtd) mandating vehicle owners to cross check their customs papers or risk their vehicles being impounded.
