EEDC debunks allegation of massive power outage by Imo State
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has debunked an allegation by the Imo state government of a planned ‘major power outage’ in the state.
According to EEDC, the Imo State government through a public announcement signed by Declan Emelumba, the Commissioner of Information, Public Orientation and Strategy had alleged that the east based electricity distribution company was planning a massive electricity outage in Imo to sabotage the state government’s electricity project. An allegation that EEDC described as baseless, unfounded and completely devoid of truth.
The company therefore urged the general public and customers in Imo state in particular to disregard the claim as it is not planning any major power outage.
In a statement signed by it’s Group Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, EEDC said: “It is unfortunate that the Imo state government has chosen the path of propaganda as a means of diverting public attention and masking it’s long-standing hostility toward EEDC and it’s operations within the state.”
“EEDC remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of electricity consumers”, it noted.
It however urged the state government to provide an enabling environment for license operators to function effectively rather than frustrating their operations through the use of state machinery.
“It is on record that on Saturday 15th November, armed policemen allegedly acting on the instructions of the Imo State government stormed Egbu Station of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and forced the operators on duty at gun point to shut down all feeders. The action plunged into total darkness”.
EEDC however emphasised that there was no plan whatsoever to carry out any major outage in Imo state as the company is committed to serving it’s customers and continues to make significant investments aimed at improving supply reliability and overall service quality across the state.
“We urge all our customers in Imo State to note that if any outage occurs from this moment onward, the responsible party is clear. The state government having raised false alarms, unfounded and baseless accusations against the EEDC should be held responsible”, the statement posited.
