New technology to stop tax fraud introduced in Rivers
A new technology that will check tax fraud and illegal tax collection has been introduced by the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service.
The RIRS Chairman, ThankGod Norteh, explained that with the new technology, taxpayers would not have to go through stress or unnecessary bottlenecks in tax payment.
According to Punch, Norteh, who spoke with reporters in Port Harcourt on Saturday, added that measures had also been put in place to discourage tax evasion in the state.
Explaining that the technology will be put into use in January 2019, the RIRS chairman pointed out that the technology would reduce the crowd of taxpayers that stream to various bank and RIRS offices.
He stated that with the new expertise, taxpayers would be expected to do most of their business as it concerned tax payment and clearance online and from the comfort of their homes.
“It is important to make it clear how tax system will work in the state from January 2019; it is important that we disclose what will start in January.
“We will introduce a technology that will help the tax payer process their tax easily without coming to our office. We do not want the crowd that use to come and take over our office from January.
“At the beginning of our time in office, the government stopped all forms of taxes based on what people in the state were facing. There was problem of multiple taxation because some persons took advantage.
“We want to have a seamless tax practice from January. Even as we talk, there are touts going about to take unwanted taxes,” he said.
Norteh, however, said he was impressed with the compliance level of tax payers, maintaining that the situation ensured that the internally generated revenue of the state did not drop in spite of the economic slump the country was facing.
