Regulation enforcement, sustained awareness campaign keys to combating illicit trade

The Spirits and Wines Association of Nigeria (SWAN), rose from a stakeholders workshop on combating illicit trade in Nigeria’s spirits and wines, with the position that consistent regulation enforcement and sustained awareness campaign are among the key factors to combating illicit trade.
The one-day event which had the theme: Combating Illicit Trade in the Spirits and Wines Industry in Nigeria, was held at Abuja Continental Hotel, on April 22, and brought together regulators, policymakers, enforcement agencies, and key industry players in response to the growing challenge of illicit trade in Nigeria.
The workshop provided a platform for robust discussions on the scale, risks, and solutions to illicit alcohol trade, which continues to pose serious threats to public health, government revenue, and legitimate businesses.
SWAN, is an umbrella body of producers, importers and marketers of spirits and wine alcoholic beverages in Nigeria.
In his remarks, SWAN President, Micheal Ehindero, emphasised the urgency of collective action while rallying stakeholders against the menace.
“Illicit trade in spirits and wines is not just an industry issue—it is a national concern. It undermines consumer safety, erodes government revenue, and distorts fair competition. Today’s engagement reinforces that sustainable solutions will only come from coordinated efforts across government, industry, and enforcement agencies”.
Also speaking, Tony Okwoju, Director-General of SWAN, highlighted the importance of translating dialogue into action.
“This workshop has moved the conversation forward. We have identified practical, implementable strategies, from strengthening enforcement to improving regulatory alignment and raising consumer awareness. The focus now must be on execution. SWAN is committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that the outcomes of today’s discussions lead to measurable progress,” he added.
Participants pointed that, no single stakeholder can effectively combat illicit trade alone even as they called for enhanced collaboration between public and private sectors, more consistent enforcement of existing regulations, and sustained public awareness campaigns to curb demand for illicit products.
SWAN also acknowledged the critical role of the media in amplifying awareness and driving accountability in the fight against illicit trade.
